Georgia Chamber Applauds General Assembly for Passing Georgia Water Stewardship Act of 2010
The Georgia Chamber of Commerce congratulates Governor Sonny Perdue and the members of the Georgia General Assembly on the overwhelming passage of the House Bill 1094 and Senate Bill 370 earlier today.
"There are few things more important to the economy of our state than the availability of clean, adequate water supply," said president and CEO George Israel. "We applaud the leadership of Governor Perdue, Representative Lynn Smith and Senator Ross Tolleson on this critical issue as well as the swift action of the General Assembly to ensure the passage of this important legislation."
The bills were based on recommendations made at the end of last year by the Governor’s Water Contingency Planning Task Force to encourage conservation, reduce water loss, and implement new programs to capture additional water supply.
"Georgia's recent and historical drought brought to light how critical measures such as those included in the legislation passed today are to our future success," continued Israel. "That was certainly underscored by Judge Magnuson's ruling earlier this year. This bill will help both businesses and citizens of our state be more mindful of their water use and become better stewards overall - ensuring adequate statewide water supplies for future needs."
Georgia Chamber Environment & Energy Committee Chair Tim Lowe (Lowe Engineering, Atlanta) served as a co-chair of the Governor's task force, which was comprised of business, environment and government leaders from throughout the state, many of whom were members of the state chamber of commerce.
